ANTIQUE ART GLASS SHADES OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY AND CONDITION.

Howard Kwan has been collecting Art Nouveau glass shades for over 25 years.

Starting as a stained-glass hobbyist, Howard began searching out metal bases for his stained-glass creations. Upon discovering that many of the original Handel metal bases he was finding were missing their matching shades, he began seeking out suitable shades to compliment his metal works.

Quezal 10-inch gold iridescent

Steuben favorite shade

Steuben 10-inch blue aurene

Inspired by the workmanship, colour and intricate designs of these fascinating shades. Howard quickly became engrossed in the work of Tiffany Studios, Steuben, Quezal, Lustre Art, Fostoria, Handel and Durand. The collection was born…

Howard’s first shade purchase was a Quezal 10-inch gold iridescent with white pulled feather border in green, which came with a Handel harp floor lamp base.

His favourite piece is a Steuben 10-inch blue over calcite with gold aurene applied border and further decorated with leaf and vine motif.

After 30 years of collecting — and with the help of a well-respected local historian, author, and fellow collector — Howard obtained his ultimate acquisition: a Steuben 10-inch Tyrian shade. Beyond shades, he enjoys finding after-hour ‘whimsies’, including Steuben sock darners.

He is currently a member of the Carder Steuben Club.
